SPIELRAUM

The LGA Original Program

Understand the space

Recognize the possibilities

Expand what you can do

The German word Spielraum does not have one exact English equivalent. Depending on the situation, English may use words such as room, leeway, scope or latitude.

Having Spielraum means having more than one meaningful way to respond, decide, or act in a situation.

For language learning, that idea becomes very concrete.

In conversation, there is rarely only one useful way to respond.

If someone asks:

Wann kommst du?

you might answer:

Morgen.

Vielleicht erst morgen Abend.

or

Ich komme morgen gegen acht Uhr.

These responses do different things. One may be all the information the situation needs. Another adds uncertainty. Another gives a more precise time. A longer response is not automatically more useful. Different responses serve different purposes.

That is one simple example of Spielraum in language.

Our dialogues make this Spielraum visible. They place German inside concrete, relatable situations with people, intentions, relationships and responses. Learners can see how vocabulary, expressions and grammar are actually used within a situation rather than encountering them only as separate rules or exercises.

The dialogues are also designed to give learners room to participate. Depending on the learning environment, learners can choose how a character responds, make decisions, contribute their own ideas, change the direction of a situation, or help develop what happens next.

LGA creates readable, speakable and interactive educational media that learners can enter, respond to and help shape.

Eight core courses. Two different ways to learn and use German.

SPIELRAUM currently organizes its core live language courses into two course families:

Conversation & Structure

Learn German through guided conversation, LGA-created dialogues, and useful language structures. Build vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and communication skills with support that adapts to your level and goals.

Dialogues & Games

Use German through interactive dialogues, games, roles, stories, choices, and creation. Learners can influence responses, situations, decisions, characters, and what happens next. Games can become part of the learning environment itself.

Both course families are available at four stages: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Proficient. Both course families can combine conversation, dialogues, structure, media, games and learning activities, but they use them with a different emphasis.

Play and Games

There is another idea built into the German word SPIELRAUM: Spiel means play or game

At LGA, games can be a short activity inside a lesson, an interactive listening challenge, a story in which decisions change what happens next, or an entire game world used for German learning.

Games work well for language learning because they give learners something concrete to do with German. They may need to understand information, remember something from an earlier dialogue, react to another person, make a choice, explain a decision, cooperate, compete, solve a problem or decide what should happen next. LGA sources describe play as creating roles, goals, choices, uncertainty, cooperation, competition and consequences that generate reasons to understand, respond, communicate and act in German.

Final Control by Learn German America

Final Control is LGA’s competitive interactive story and game system.

Players do not simply follow a story. They help create it.

Challengers write their own competing German story contributions. They can introduce new ideas, characters, problems and possible directions for what happens next. Other players evaluate eligible contributions anonymously, while the Story Keeper decides how the continuing story develops. The Keeper may select one idea, combine several contributions or take the story in another direction.

Competition is part of the game.

Players can earn Game Score and build strategic influence over time. Strong contributions can affect later rounds, decisions and story development.

Final Control also includes game mechanics beyond writing. Powers can change what players are able to do, and a Power Wheel can introduce chance and new strategic possibilities. Powers can affect contributions, decisions, player influence and the direction of the developing story.

Different LGA characters, locations and storylines can appear inside Final Control.

It combines German writing, speaking, reading, decision making, competition, peer evaluation, strategy, chance and interactive storytelling.

German is not only the language of the story. It is part of how the game is played.

Kahoot

Kahoot turns language material into a fast shared challenge.

LGA can use Kahoot for vocabulary, useful expressions, grammar patterns, story details, cultural information and material from dialogues. Learners retrieve what they already know, distinguish between possible answers, react quickly and compare results with other learners.

LGA’s source system also includes teacher created and student created Kahoots, course review, vocabulary and structure retrieval, formative feedback and group competition.

A dialogue therefore does not disappear after it has been read or spoken. Its characters, vocabulary, situations and details can return later as game content.

Roxxem

Roxxem brings music, listening and game based interaction into German learning.

LGA can use Roxxem to work with authentic listening, lyrics and vocabulary through interactive activities and minigames. The same material can then return in conversation, vocabulary work, review or other lesson activities.

This creates another way into German: learners are listening for meaning, recognizing language and responding while working with media that already has its own rhythm and context.

World of Warcraft auf Deutsch

In World of Warcraft auf Deutsch, an existing game world becomes part of the German lesson.

What happens during play can become the learning material. A quest may introduce new vocabulary. A character or location may lead to questions. A decision may become a conversation. Something the learner wants to accomplish in the game may create an immediate need for a word, expression or explanation in German.

Playing, conversation, dialogue and language work can move back and forth. Something that happens in the game can lead to a new German dialogue, and language developed during the lesson can become useful again when the learner returns to the game.

This two way connection between dialogue and games is part of the broader LGA design: characters, situations, vocabulary, relationships, story details and decisions can move from dialogue into a game, while events in a game can generate new conversation and dialogue.

Media Education

Use media to learn. Use media to think, create, and develop something of your own.

Media Education at LGA is about learning how to use media purposefully, both for language learning and for your own ideas, projects, and creative work.

A major focus is artificial intelligence, especially ChatGPT.

AI as a SPIELRAUM

AI can become a SPIELRAUM for your own thinking, a space to organize thoughts, develop ideas, explore possibilities, and create something of your own.

ChatGPT can be used like a search tool. It can help find and bring together information without requiring you to search through every individual page yourself.

But that is only one way to use it.

For more complex work, the quality of the result depends strongly on what you bring into the process: your goal, the information you provide, how that information is organized, the instructions you give, the questions you ask, and the decisions you make.

ChatGPT can help organize scattered thoughts, compare different possibilities, identify connections and missing questions, structure a project, revise an idea, and continue developing something over time.

It also has limits. Important information may need to be documented and organized so that it remains available for a larger project. Results need to be reviewed. Instructions, examples, constraints, and quality checks can help keep the work focused.

The important point is that you still need to know what you are trying to achieve.

AI can suggest, organize, compare, and support. You provide the direction.

Build Your Own AI Dialogue Book

Create your own German dialogue world with AI support.

Develop characters, relationships, situations, conversations, and connected story possibilities in German.

Your own ideas provide the starting point. ChatGPT can help organize material, explore alternatives, compare different ways of saying something, and support the development of the project.

The goal is not to ask AI to create a finished book for you. Creating the book becomes part of the German learning process.

You make the creative decisions. Language work, revision, feedback, and continued development remain part of the project.

AI Lab in German

Use ChatGPT to organize your thoughts, develop your own ideas, and turn them into something concrete, in German.

AI Lab in German focuses less on using ChatGPT like a search engine and more on using it as a tool for thinking, planning, and creation.

Bring your own questions, interests, ideas, or projects. ChatGPT can help you sort thoughts, identify connections, compare possibilities, structure next steps, revise your work, and develop an idea further.

German becomes part of the process through discussion, planning, revision, and creation.

Level: B1+
Length: 60 minutes

AI Lab in English

Use ChatGPT to organize your thoughts, develop your own ideas, and turn them into something concrete, in English.

AI Lab in English follows the same approach without the additional challenge of working in German.

Bring an idea, question, project, plan, or problem you want to work on. Learn how to use ChatGPT to organize information, develop a concept, compare different directions, break larger goals into manageable steps, revise your work, and move an idea toward a real result.

The focus is not simply on getting answers from AI. It is on learning how to work with AI so that it becomes more useful for your own thinking and your own projects.

Length: 60 minutes
Price: $20 per session
Participation: 1 - 5 participants

Flexible from week to week
